Cultural appropriation and the mixing of British and Irish flags in the one photoset?

Wow.

It’s like they’re trying to piss off as many people as they can in the one go.

Considering the armed struggle glam/70lbs of semtex romanticism crap spewed by some of the people outraged by this, the reactions are all the funnier.

In light of the vast reaction these images have caused, I think it’s time for me as the photographer to make a statement regarding my intentions for this shoot.

The idea behind the shoot was to show the segregation in Northern Ireland between the Catholic and Protestant people through the concept of tribalism. This is by no means a new idea or a crazy comparison to make. The entire country is divided by colours and gangs. Recent statistics show  that “60 per cent of lower-income Protestants and Catholics would not work in a place predominantly of the other religion” (Morley and Robins, 2001, p80) and over half of the entire population “lives in areas more than 90 per cent Protestant or 95 per cent Catholic” (p80), showing that these issues are still very real and present today.  

My aim was not to offend but to simply show facts and reality through fashion based images. People are still attacked today simply for being seen as either “Catholic” or “Protestant” and nothing else. Our country is torn in two by bitterness and hatred based on nothing more than labels and imaginaries. It’s time to tear down the walls that are splitting our country in pieces. 

If all I receive is bitter reactions to these images then all it does is further prove my point that if people are unwilling to change and let go of the past then these flags will forever be associated with hatred and division.
